It’s a funny moment when we realize that we’re becoming–or maybe even have already become–just like our parents. For me, the moment occurred years ago when my mom and I arrived at a restaurant to have lunch together wearing the exact same sweater. No, we hadn’t gone shopping together or called each other to coordinate. We just have very similar taste in clothing. I’m sure everyone at the restaurant must have thought we were that kind of cheesy mother-daughter duo: you know, the kind that has special matching outfits for every occasion. But it’s always been that way for us. Our similarities are not just limited to clothing, though; we talk alike and think alike, too, often finishing each others sentences. In fact, we can go out together and not speak a word but still somehow have entire conversations just with the looks that we give each other.
It was shocking when I first realized how much I’ve become just like my mom, but I fully embrace the similarities and now I recognize those similarities as the biggest blessings.
I also feel extremely blessed to be surrounded by the most wonderful women, mothers and grandmothers alike. One of my absolute favorite photos was taken last year when my husband and I had our wedding (which took place on the day before Mother’s Day) and it includes my mom, me, my Ma-Ma, and my mother-in-law
Because our wedding and Mother’s Day occurred on the same weekend, it was one big celebration! And what made it even more special for me was the fact that it was also the first time I got to celebrate Mother’s Day, too! I’m so fortunate to have the most wonderful step-son who has always been so sweet and loving with me and treated me like family, even when I technically wasn’t. This year he made me a bookmark for Mother’s Day because he noticed that I’m always reading and turning down the corner of the page to mark my place
So, in honor of Mother’s Day, I hope everyone will have a chance to celebrate with their moms and to let them know how important they are! And because holidays and food always go together, today is a great day to whip up something special for your mom, like Red Velvet Pancakes for breakfast
……Or you could make her some Chocolate Pecan Pie Bars for dessert
……Or you could just take your mom out to a nice restaurant–because no one likes to have to clean up afterward Whatever you do, just make sure to let all of the wonderful mothers in your life know how much you love and appreciate them.
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the beautiful moms out there!
