One year ago today, my best friend made me the happiest girl in the world by saying “I do.” I still can’t believe that it’s already been a year! But you know what they say, time flies when you’re having fun
Although my husband and I have been together (including dating) for almost six years, I feel as though we are still learning new things about each other on a daily basis. I will admit, it’s not always easy or perfect, but there is beauty even in the arguments and the rough times because it’s usually when times are trying that we learn to bend and compromise and work together. My Ma-Ma, who was married to my Pa-Pa for almost 60 years, shared with us the most brilliant advice for a successful marriage: Never let the little stuff get big. Without fail, Ma-Ma’s sage advice has always held true. It’s certainly humbling to recognize that a large argument stemmed from something as petty as dirty socks or leaving the toilet seat up. Thank you Ma-Ma
**I had to share Ma-Ma’s advice because I believe it’s good advice for everyone, not just newlyweds.
Not only is my husband compromising and patient, he’s also been extremely understanding and supportive of me, especially with the changes that I’ve made in the past year. Choosing to completely change my diet has not only effected me, it has had a major impact on my husband and my step-son as well. There are restaurants we once frequented that are no longer an option for me–i.e. there aren’t even salads on the menu, let alone gluten-free, vegetarian dishes–and the boys are constantly waiting for me to finish preparing my food because we are usually unable to eat the same thing.
As diligently as I’ve held to my changed way of eating, I do believe that there are times when it’s important to make exceptions. Today, I will be making (at least) one very important exception: our wedding cake
When my husband and I got married I learned that it’s a tradition to save the top layer of the wedding cake to eat on the first anniversary. Well, our sweet friends Sheila and Tom have been saving our wedding cake in their freezer since last year (thanks guys)! A couple of days ago we unearthed the time capsule and I was pretty amazed at what we found. Yes, it’s a little mashed and lopsided, but it still looks to be in pretty good condition! As far as how it tastes, I guess we will just have to wait until tonight and see :)
I can’t wait for tonight when I get to celebrate with my husband! Ultimately, I am so very thankful to have my wonderful partner in crime to share with me the ups and downs in life. I know there will be many more changes and many more years to come and I can’t wait to see what life has in store for us!
